Getting a First Look at CASP

In this episode of Bridging the Gap, hosted by Utah Behavior In this episode of Bridging the Gap, Utah Behavior Services sits down with four first-time attendees of the CASP (Council of Autism Service Providers) conference, reflecting on their experiences and what they learned.

The group, consisting of clinical directors and assistant directors from various offices, discusses their favorite moments and key insights gained from the event. One highlight is the keynote speaker, who addressed the evolution of ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis), emphasizing the importance of acknowledging the field’s history while focusing on how it can continue to progress.

The attendees appreciated this message, feeling inspired to move beyond past practices and focus on the future of ABA, including how to use it more effectively to benefit clients.

In addition to the keynote, our team members found great value in sessions about ascent-informed care and self-advocacy, particularly about teaching clients not just compliance but also how to assert their boundaries and make independent choices.

They also spoke about the importance of sexual education for individuals with disabilities, highlighting how it plays a crucial role in safety, adaptive skills, and reducing caregiver burnout.

Our four attendees were excited to see that Utah Behavior Services is already applying many of the cutting-edge practices discussed at CASP, leaving a proud feeling of the organization’s commitment to providing high-quality care.

The conversation also turned to the importance of staff development and retention, especially in a field where burnout is common. We discussed ways to offer more growth opportunities for clinicians, both vertically and laterally, to ensure they remain engaged and motivated. They highlighted the need for creating environments where high performers receive more recognition, as well as finding new avenues for staff to develop leadership or specialized skills beyond traditional career paths. This discussion emphasized the importance of fostering a growth mindset within the company, something that Utah Behavior Services already values highly.
