Growing ABA Advocacy: Insights from CUAP and Legal Experts
In this podcast episode of Bridging the Gap, hosted by Utah Behavior Services, we sat down with members from The Coalition of Utah ABA Providers (CUAP) and two legal experts who attended this year’s Council of Autism Service Providers (CASP) Conference.
The conversation highlights CUAP’s mission to foster a unified approach to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services while addressing the needs of individuals with autism and behavioral challenges.
It explores the origins of CUAP, which was influenced by guidance and resources from the Council of Autism Service Providers (CASP). The guests reflect on the early days of CUAP’s formation and how it has helped ABA providers in Utah improve service delivery through collaboration, standardization, and legislative advocacy. This includes challenges in navigating telehealth, compliance, and ensuring adequate insurance coverage for autism services. Through these efforts, CUAP has strengthened the field, helping providers ensure a consistent, high-quality level of care.
CUAP plays a role in influencing insurance rates and provider standards by advocating for improved reimbursement and equitable treatment for individuals receiving ABA services. The collaborative efforts between CUAP and CASP have provided ABA providers with essential resources, training, and professional development opportunities, which have been instrumental in advancing care across the state.
Utah Behavior Services brought in legal experts to discuss the importance of navigating employment laws and regulatory requirements within the ABA field. Legal counsel provides insights into how companies can manage complex issues such as compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), creating clear policies, and maintaining a healthy work environment.
The conversation emphasizes the importance of having well-structured employee handbooks and internal policies that help both management and staff understand their roles and responsibilities.ABA providers need to ensure they are meeting legal obligations while supporting employees through reasonable accommodations and maintaining a compliant workplace. Proactive legal advice is key to reducing risk, managing employee issues, and maintaining ethical business practices in the fast-evolving ABA landscape.
